Suppah in The Woods

Making Memories

Making the best of what Maine has to offer in winter

Going with the flow of the seasons we have taken what in the summer are mountain bike trails and have been using them as snowshoe trails. Absolutely wonderful to be able to still get outdoors and into the woods. At any age being able to stay active is important. Shoot a message if you’re going to be in the area and want to walk.

We had a fabulous time yesterday shoeing down to the green Norris Bench and setting up for a deer meat stew, cooked on sight in a dutch-oven.
The weather was cooperative, even though in the morning I was a bit dubious because once again the air temp may have been moderate but the pesky NW breeze was again present. As luck would have it as the afternoon progressed the breeze faded away.
The camp site is just over 1/2 mile from the farmhouse. Which in itself isn’t too awfully far but we had to make numerous trips dragging a toboggan with supplies to get setup, which made it a bit more of a challenge. Thankfully the heavy part, (fire ring) will be staying at the Norris Bench for future cookouts.
I’ll attach a few pictures of our adventure and a short, (sped up) video of some of the day.

Stew was pretty basic, we didn’t want to run to the store so made it with ingredients we had on hand. Deer steak(cut into small pieces), Onion, sweet potato, carrots, fennel, Brussel sprouts (quartered), celery. The liquid broth was made on the woodstove and transported down in a thermos. That was made with a soup bone and a few spices.

The cooking was done in a dutch-oven over a bed of charcoal coals.

In the end my wife and sister joined for a tasty suppah in the woods.
